Is the Greek God Hades Evil???

Posted on October 28th, 2009 by admin in greek afterlife | 20 Comments »

I know that now a days he is usually depicted as being unkind to those who go to his domain (Hades the place) which is generally an undesirable afterlife.

But everything that I have read about Hades (the place) has shown me that it is pretty bad o_O lol

Well anyway, I was wondering, is Hades really as bad as he is depicted in modern times? Such as in the Hercules movies (The Disney cartoon included) where he is typically shown as being a "devil" figure.

The Halls of Hades are actually not a bad place and the god Hades is not evil. Hades would not have been referred to as the "Hospitable One" if he were feared or thought of as evil.

The common perception of the domain of Hades has been confused with a place of punishment — which in Greek Mythology is more properly Tartarus.

Edith Hamilton is not a reliable source although her book is still used as a beginners resource (her research about some of the Gods she considers to be of lesser importance is incredibly shoddy) I would recommend Carl Kerenyi’s "Gods of the Greeks" as a FAR better resource

Electron He may say it to prevent their souls from being damned.

a very good question.

if you read the Quran .. you will find that this is not possible.

But that prompts me to ask you , what if Jesus comes and asks the Christians the same question?

What will you say when he says, I came to show you the straight path and what made you get off the path?

The reason Quran was reveled because, the bible was changed by a few/group of men to take advantage for themselves.
Read the history, you will find how small changes were introduced to get a upper hand on the common folks and rule them.

If a Christian dies and theres no afterlife, he’s not going to care, but if an atheist dies , regrets forever

which is the better choice in life, to be a christian or an atheist?

Nice question, this has always been one of my main philosophies, I believe that if we Christians are right, we gain, if we’re wrong, we don’t lose… but if atheists are right, they don’t gain anything, but if their wrong, they lose everything…

Why is it that religions that dont so much talk about an afterlife shrinking in numbers?

Posted on October 28th, 2009 by admin in judaism afterlife | 6 Comments »

judaism, zorastrianism dont actually mention much about an afterlife and their followers are not so much concerned about life beyond the grave.

Could this be a reason why these 2 religions are fast shrinking in numbers of their followers?
katmandu,
Buddhists believe in reincarnation right?

Actually judaism isn’t shrinking, it’s numbers more than doubled since the holocaust. admittedly it’s not an easy religion to follow but jews survived millenia of persecutions and oppression. nice to see antisemitsm so carefully disguised as concern lassie. as for Zoroastrianism, you’d have to google it

What do you wish to know? I’m taking a classical greek course now – It’s so interesting!

If you want the best poem read Hesiod’s Theology. It will tell you how the gods came to be and who rules over what.

As for the afterlife everyone goes to Hades in the underworld. If a female dies before she is married then she becomes a bride of Hades. Very few mortals, such as Heracles become gods and live with the Gods.

Many of the Gods are thought to have originated or been "taken" from other cultures such as the egyptians. There are a lot of similarities between greek gods and egyptian gods.

Gods were worshiped through the sacrafice of an animal (or many). The throats of an animal would be cut to let the blood spill. The bones and fat of the animal would then be burned for the gods. If you want the story of why the gods get the bones and fat you’ll have to look it up as its too long to type.

Blood is poured on the ground to worship the dead.

Greek Gods were considered to be no more moral than mortals. They fought as if they were mortal, they cheated on each other etc…

It was believed that if you were too happy with your success, the gods would punish you for it.
